You basically just need to make sure your device is already on 3.1.2. If it isn't, you can either update to 3.1.2 or do a restore. A update just updates your device to 3.1.2 without removing anything already on the device. There are two ways to do a restore. You can click on restore and iTunes will download the firmware and restore your device with that firmware. It erases everything on your device. You can also download the 3.1.2 firmware manually by going here: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ Make sure you download the 3.1.2 firmware for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Once you do that, alt+click (Windows) or option+click (Mac OS X) on the restore button in iTunes and look for the .IPSW you just downloaded.
Once you're on 3.1.2, just open up blackra1n (link above) and click on the "make it ra1n" button. When that's done (you're back to your homescreen), open up the "blackra1n" app on your homescreen and install Cydia, ~NOT~ Rock. Rock is just a crappy version of Cydia that shouldn't be around anymore. Done! Read the rest if you're interested in an unlock for your iPhone.
If you want to unlock your iPhone, install "sn0w" while at the "blackra1n" app. Reboot, then pop in your new SIM card. Note if you're on T-Mobile: You'll have to disable 3G in Settings, General, Network, since T-Mobile's 3G network isn't compatible with the iPhone.
There you go! Ask any questions in the forum here http://bit.ly/5oR4LP or in the comments.
